Gaussian Blendshape Distillation for Real-Time Avatars (GALA)
This paper introduces GALA (Gaussian Animation via Linear Approximation), a method to significantly speed up the animation of 3D Gaussian avatars. It achieves this by replacing complex neural inference with a simpler, linear combination of 'blendshapes', making real-time avatar animation feasible even on mobile devices.

Imagine any complex, wiggling line can be perfectly recreated by adding up a few simple sine and cosine waves. GALA does something similar for avatar animation: it finds a few 'basic poses' (blendshapes) that, when combined linearly, can approximate any complex facial expression or body movement, much like a Fourier series decomposes a signal into fundamental frequencies.
How GALA Accelerates Avatar Animation
- 11. **Identify Core Movements:** GALA first analyzes a pre-trained 3D Gaussian avatar model to find a set of 'identity-independent blendshapes'. These are like fundamental components of movement or expression.
- 22. **Linear Approximation:** It discovers that the avatar's animation can be closely approximated by combining these blendshapes linearly, meaning each blendshape contributes a certain amount to the final pose.
- 33. **Distillation:** Instead of the original, heavy neural network inferring each frame, GALA distills this process. It learns a shallow neural network (a 'coefficient predictor') that quickly determines how much of each blendshape is needed for a given animation frame.
- 44. **Efficient Reconstruction:** The predicted coefficients are then used in a simple linear blend to reconstruct the avatar's pose, drastically reducing the computational cost compared to the original neural inference.
- 55. **Optimization:** To further improve fidelity and reduce memory, GALA uses block-local PCA (Principal Component Analysis) to construct these blendshapes efficiently, considering rendering quality and memory limits.
Aₜ ≈ Σᵢ_=₁^N cₜ_,ᵢ Bᵢ
$A_t$ represents the avatar's state at time $t$. $B_i$ is the $i$-th blendshape basis. $c_{t,i}$ is the coefficient (weight) for the $i$-th blendshape at time $t$. The sum $\Sigma$ means we add up the weighted blendshapes to approximate the avatar's state.
GALA has been validated by accelerating the animation of facial expressions and full-body movements with clothing dynamics across three distinct avatar models. This allows for smooth, real-time avatar performance at up to 60 frames per second on mobile devices, which was previously challenging due to high computational demands.
Complex neural avatar animations can be effectively approximated by a linear combination of a few fundamental blendshapes, enabling massive computational savings for real-time applications.
